The JHS Beta Club qualified to attend the National Convention thanks to scholars Caley Sample, Mandy Yuan, and Shylynn Phillips, all Juniors, who won first place for the Service Learning Showcase at the state conference in Hot Springs on January 24-25, 2020. The scholars are planning to attend the National Beta Convention in June 2020 at Fort Worth, Texas.

After competing in the Service Learning Showcase and other events on Saturday, the Beta Scholars returned to the convention center the next morning for the award ceremony. The scholars watched group performances and greeted their new state officers while waiting for the competition results to be announced.

“The highlight for me was when they called Jacksonville for first place,” Phillips recalled about receiving the champion plaque with her fellow contributors.

The scholars took a detour while on their trip in Hot Springs to explore the history of Bath House Row together. JHS Beta Club Sponsor, Ms.Armstrong, took the scholars on a tour through Fordyce Bathhouse and showed them around the bathhouse.

“I drank god water,” Ian Fields, a senior, realized after a passerby said the warm fountain water he filled his bottle with was very spiritual.

Nine Titan scholars attended the State Conference, including Mandy Yuan, Caley Sample, Shylynn Phillips, Ian Fields, Alyvia Adams, Deshanti Nelson, Taniya Mason, KeKe McKenzie, and Kennedy Morris. Beta club members would like extend a special thanks to their sponsor, Ms.Armstrong, for making the experience possible.
